Swim for Life, created by the Lifesaving Society, is a fun and flexible swim instruction program that helps swimmers develop essential strokes and skills. Each lesson includes plenty of in-water practice. The program also incorporates Water Smart® drowning and injury prevention education at every level, promoting safe choices around water and ice. All our swim lessons follow the Swim for Life curriculum, except for summer and private lessons.
One-on-one sessions that cater to your swimmer’s individual needs and skill level. We'll give them all the attention they need to feel confident and improve their swimming skills in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Building the foundation of swimming skill development, these beginner swimmers will learn how to safely enter various depths of water, tread water wearing a lifejacket, open their eyes underwater, and breath control. They’ll also work on floats, rollovers, glides, and kicks.
Swimmers will gain comfort in deeper water by jumping in, learning their sideways entry, and treading water without a lifejacket. They’ll start learning new skills like flutter kick on their front, back, and side, vertical whip kick with an aid, and swim ten metres of front and back crawl.
Swimmers will make a splash with their kneeling dives and forward roll entries. They’ll learn challenging, but fun skills like handstands and front somersaults underwater. Increased distance and duration are incorporated for front and back flutter kick, front and back crawl, whip kick and interval training.
These intermediate swimmers will be able to roll into deep water, tread water for one minute and swim 50 metres. They’ll learn standing dives and work towards being able to swim underwater for five metres. They’ll improve their front crawl, back crawl, and whip kick and be introduced to breaststroke.
Swimmers will be challenged with a new set of skills: shallow dives, tuck jumps, eggbeater kicks and backward somersaults underwater. Stroke technique and endurance will get more focus as swimmers will need to do longer swims and interval training for all strokes.
Swimmers will master advanced aquatic skills such as stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks. They’ll also refine their strokes to boost swimming strength, power, and endurance—crucial for completing the 300-metre workout required to complete the level.
After completion of Swimmer 6, Swim Patrol is the next step for advancing swimming skills. Swimmers will continue to develop their swim strokes and gain skills that prepare them for the Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion courses.
Prerequisite: Ability to swim 25-metres without stopping, followed by treading water for 30 seconds
