For beginners who are just starting out and swimmers looking to learn or improve their strokes. Swimmers will build confidence in the water; develop smooth, recognizable strokes; and improve their overall water fitness.
Swim for Life, created by the Lifesaving Society, is a fun and flexible swim instruction program that helps swimmers develop essential strokes and skills. Each lesson includes plenty of in-water practice. The program also incorporates Water Smart® drowning and injury prevention education at every level, promoting safe choices around water and ice. All our swim lessons follow the Swim for Life curriculum, except for summer and private lessons.
Learn at your own pace. Private lessons are customized to your goals and ability level, whether you're a beginner or more advanced. Lessons can be taught one-on-one or with two participants, making it a great way to learn with a friend. For the best learning experience, we recommend participants have comparable swimming abilities.
Swimmers will learn stroke fundamentals such as floats, rolls, glides, and kicks and work towards being able to complete short distance swims (10-15 metres) on their front and back.
If you're uneasy about water, submerging your face or swimming unassisted, start with our Scared Stiff class.
Swimmers will practice different entries into deep water including dives, rolls and tuck jumps (cannonballs). New underwater skills like handstands and front somersaults will be introduced. Swimmers will work on building strength and endurance, aiming to tread water for 1-2 minutes and swim 50 metres. They’ll improve their front crawl, back crawl, and whip kick, and be introduced to breaststroke.
Swimmers will work towards mastering front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. They’ll learn challenging skills like shallow dives, stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks. Swimmers can expect to improve their fitness levels as they work on completing 300-metre swims and 25-50 metre sprints.
Swimmers will work on improving their strokes and achieving their personal fitness goals. A structured, training focussed approach that incorporates water-based interval training, endurance swims and sprints will help swimmers boost their stamina and speed.
