Aquatic Certifications

Courses for becoming a lifeguard, swim instructor, or to recertify.

Note: Participants must provide proof of certification for courses where prerequisites are required.

Bronze Medallion with CPR-C and AED


Challenging candidates both mentally and physically, this course focuses on the four components of water rescue —judgement, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Participants acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Participants will also learn CPR skills and theory for adult, child, and infant casualties and how to use an AED.

Prerequisite: Must be 13 years of age or older or have completed Bronze Star

Bronze Cross with First Aid and O2


This course prepares participants for responsibilities as an assistant lifeguard, emphasizing teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Participants will develop their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. They will also learn all aspects of first aid, including the benefits and correct use of oxygen in emergency care situations.

Equipment Required: Fanny pack, pocket mask and whistle

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Bronze Medallion

National Lifeguard


This course trains lifeguards in safety supervision and rescue in a pool environment.

Equipment Required: Fanny pack, pocket mask and whistle

Prerequisite: Must be 16 years of age or older and have completed Bronze Cross (need not be current) and possess Aquatic Emergency Care certification (AEC) or Standard First Aid certification from a Government of Alberta approved training agency

National Lifeguard Instructor


This course explores teaching approaches and techniques and prepares participants to teach the National Lifeguard course.

Prerequisite: Current National Lifeguard certification (any option, must be held for a minimum of two years) and Lifesaving Instructor certification (need not be current). Experience teaching Lifesaving Society certification programs is recommended.

Swim and Lifesaving Instructor


This certification allows candidates to teach and evaluate Swim for Life® programs, Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and Lifesaving Society CPR programs.

Prerequisite: Must be 16 years of age or older and have successfully completed Bronze Cross or higher (need not be current)

Intermediate First Aid


This Government of Alberta approved first aid course provides comprehensive training in all aspects of first aid and CPR including medical/legal aspects, spinal injuries, environmental injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C and AED certification.

To add Oxygen Administration (O2) certification for an additional fee, email aquatics@macewan.ca a minimum of two business days before the course begins.

Prerequisite: none

Intermediate First Aid Recertification


This course requires both a theory and practical examination of all Intermediate First Aid skills.

Prerequisite: Current Government of Alberta workplace-approved Intermediate First Aid certification.

First Aid Instructor/Examiner


This course prepares participants to teach and evaluate candidates in Lifesaving Society CPR, Emergency First Aid, Intermediate First Aid, Aquatic Emergency Care, CPR-HCP, and Oxygen (O2) Administration programs. Participants also learn about long-range/short-term planning, class management, safety supervision and the principles of evaluation.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Instructor (for the 16 hour course) and current Lifesaving Intermediate First Aid from a Government of Alberta approved training agency

First Aid Instructor Recertification


This course prepares participants to teach and evaluate candidates in Lifesaving Society CPR, Emergency First Aid, Intermediate First Aid, Aquatic Emergency Care, CPR-HCP, and Oxygen (O2) Administration programs. Participants also learn about long-range/short-term planning, class management, safety supervision and the principles of evaluation.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Society First Aid Instructor; current Lifesaving Society Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) or Intermediate First Aid; all mandatory updates have been completed (as required).
