Rec Leagues

Play, learn, and connect with others! Whether you're an experienced athlete or a beginner eager to learn, our rec leagues offer a fun and inclusive environment for everyone.

League Eligibility

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Current varsity athletes cannot play in a rec league that matches their varsity sport.
  • Participants are limited to one team per league but can play in multiple leagues.
  • Valid photo ID is required at every game.

Registration Types

You can sign up as a team with a group of friends, or as a free agent and be assigned to a team.

FULL TEAM

A group of players led by a captain, with enough members to form a complete team. Each player on the team must complete their own registration and payment. No additional players are added by Rec League staff.

FREE AGENT

Someone who wants to play, but doesn’t have enough players to make a full team. Free agents can sign up solo or request specific teammates on the registration form. Our Rec League staff will assemble the team, though team sizes may vary based on registration levels.

Fees

League fees must be paid online at the time of registration.

Fees include:

  • Gym access (Sport and Wellness membership is not required)
  • 6-8 weeks of league play (regular season and playoffs)
  • Equipment
  • Staffed games
  • Prizes for league champions and spirit winners
MACEWAN STUDENT RATE

To receive the MacEwan student rate, log in using your student email. If you register before the semester starts and don't see the student price, you can sign up at the public rate and we’ll refund the difference once the semester begins. For assistance, visit our Welcome Desk on the first floor of the Christenson Family Centre for Sport and Wellness (Building 8) or call 780-497-5300 (Option 2).

Gender Ratios

Rec leagues are open to all genders—men, women, two-spirit, trans, non-binary. Participants can join according to their self-identified gender.

OPEN LEAGUE – This league has no gender ratios.

MIXED LEAGUE – This league has specific gender ratios, limiting the number of self-identified men on each team, while the remaining spots are open to any gender.

Tiered Leagues

Leagues with eight or more teams will start the season in randomly assigned tiers and will be re-seeded after three weeks of play to keep the league balanced and competitive.

Forfeits

A forfeit happens when a team informs us in advance that they will be unable to meet the minimum player or gender requirements for their league.
When a team forfeits:

  • The forfeiting team receives a 2 out of 3 spirit rating.
  • The opposing team is notified in advance.
  • Two forfeits = 1 default.
FORFEIT NOTICE

If your team is unable to meet the player or gender requirements, please email Liv at hellandl2@macewan.ca. Failure to notify and failure to show up at your game will result in a default.

Weekday League: Before 12 p.m. on game day.

Weekend Leagues: Before 12 p.m. on the Friday before the game.

Defaults

A default occurs when a team has fewer than the minimum required players at the start of the game and didn’t inform us beforehand, or when a team quits the game for any reason.
When a team defaults:

  • The defaulting team receives a 1 out of 3 spirit rating.
  • Two defaults in one season may result in removal from the league without a refund.

Subs

A sub is a player who joins a team for a single game. Teams can add subs anytime after the first week of games. Subs can play up to two games in a season; after that, they are considered a new player and must pay a pro-rated league fee. Subs are not permitted to play in the semi-final or final games of the playoffs.

All subs and/or new players must complete a roster form and waiver before playing.

SUB FEES

Subs will be charged a drop in fee to play in the game that week.

  • $8 for the public
  • $5 for MacEwan students

Spirit Ratings evaluate a team's sportsmanship and commitment to fair, fun games. Each game, the Rec staff give spirit points to each team.

  • 3 Points: Good sportsmanship and a friendly team spirit
  • 2 Points: Some poor sportsmanship or overly competitive behaviour
  • 1 Point: Poor sportsmanship, aggressive play, disrespect towards staff and behavioral offenses

A defaulted game results in a Spirit Rating of 1 for the defaulting team and 3 for their opponent.
A forfeited game results in a Spirit Rating of 2 for the forfeiting team and 3 for their opponent.
